Article excerpt

The Toronto Blue Jays scored in five of the first six innings Saturday, beat the Boston Red Sox 5-2 and remained tied for first place in the Eastern Division.

Devon White hit his 13th homer and Joe Carter got his 21st for the Blue Jays, who are tied with the New York Yankees. The Red Sox fell two games off the pace.

Pat Hentgen (14-6) allowed three hits in seven innings - singles by Scott Cooper in the second and Billy Hatcher in the fourth, and a double by Andre Dawson in the sixth. He is 3-0 against the Red Sox this year.

Boston scored a run off three relievers in the eighth before Duane Ward pitched the ninth for his 31st save.

Because of shoulder problems, Higuera (0-1) had not worked in the big leagues since June 29, 1991. He was an All-Star in 1986, when he won 20 games.

Higuera was on a 45-pitch limit. He threw 28 pitches in the first inning and 16 in the second. …
