Virgil Going to Brokerage Dean Will Become E.D. Jones Partner

Article excerpt

Robert L. Virgil, the dean of Washington University's business school for the last 16 years, is going into the brokerage business.

Virgil, who is also one of three executive vice chancellors at the university, is leaving academia Sept. 1 to become a partner at Edward D. Jones & Co., a national brokerage firm based in Maryland Heights.

In his new job, the business-school dean will work with Jones Managing Partner John W. Bachmann to help build up the firm's management ranks in preparation for a planned restructuring in coming years.

"This seems to me like a wonderful opportunity to go into a new environment and a new kind of a challenge and to put into practice some of the things I've thought about and dealt with in business education throughout my career," Virgil said Monday.

"If I'm ever going to do something like this, now is the time, with my being 59 next week."

Since March 1992, Virgil has been handling two jobs at the university.

At that time, the dean of the John M. Olin School of Business gained the additional title of executive vice chancellor of university relations. In that role, he has overseen fund-raising efforts as well as alumni and development programs, human resources and public affairs.

Meanwhile, Virgil kept his office and his role as dean of the business school while the university searched nationally for his successor. It has yet to find one.

"I was looking forward to turning the reins of the school over to a new dean," Virgil said. "It hasn't worked out that way."

With Virgil's departure, the university has named Lyn D. Pankoff, vice dean of the business school, as the school's acting dean. The search continues for a new dean. Pankoff joined the business school in 1967. He is a professor of quantitative business analysis.

Virgil's position as executive vice chancellor is not being filled at this time. …
