Carter, 32, Surprises Eagles by Retiring

Article excerpt

Defensive tackle Michael Carter stunned the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday by announcing his retirement.

Carter, the 300-pounder who was supposed to strengthen the team's run defense, told Eagles coach Rich Kotite of his decision to leave training camp in West Chester, Pa., less than three weeks before the start of the regular season.

"He just said he wanted to go home," Kotite said. "He had had enough. The spark was gone. He said it was time."

Carter, who will be 33 in October, was bothered for much of training camp by soreness in both knees and an aching shoulder.

Carter was signed by the Eagles on July 14. He played nine seasons for San Francisco, but the 49ers made little effort to re-sign him as a free agent.

Carter's best seasons with the 49ers came in the mid-1980s, when he was regarded as one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL. He made the Pro Bowl three times, the last after the 1988 season.

Carter had been slowed in recent seasons by injuries. He had missed four full games and played sparingly in several others last season, finishing with 20 tackles.

Buccaneers: First-round draft pick Eric Curry ended a 22-day holdout when he signed a five-year contract with Tampa Bay that reportedly makes him the NFL's highest-paid defensive rookie.

Terms of the agreement were not released. Curry's agent, Eugene Parker, had been seeking a deal worth more than $6 million, including a $3.2 million signing bonus.

Packers: Offensive tackle Tootie Robbins, released Aug. 3 by the New Orleans Saints, practiced with Green Bay after signing a one-year contract.

Robbins started 15 games for the Packers at right tackle last year before agreeing to a 3-year, $4.7 million contract with the Saints in the offseason. The Packers' contract with Robbins is believed to be in the $1 million range.

Robbins, 35, dislocated his left shoulder twice last season, and was injured on his first day of contact in the Saints' camp. …
