ST. LOUIS MACHINERY Harbour Group Buys Stamping Firm

Harbour Group of Clayton said Thursday that it has purchased a Massachusetts maker of packaging machinery. Detroit Tool & Engineering Co., a metal-stamping company in Lebanon, Mo., that Harbour bought just a year ago, has acquired Sencorp Systems Inc. of Hyannis, Mass. Terms were not disclosed.

Sencorp employs about 120 people. With annual sales of more than $20 million, Sencorp should raise Detroit Tool's sales to more than $95 million, Harbour said.

***** NATIONAL TELEPHONE SERVICE Union To Fight AT&T Operator Layoffs

The union that represents AT&T's long-distance operators says it will launch a nationwide campaign to fight the company's plan to lay off up to 4,000 operators and shut operator services offices in 40 cities, including St. Louis.

"These shutdowns are motivated solely by greed, not business need," said James Irvine, vice president of the Communications Workers of America, which represents 100,000 AT&T workers.

***** AUTOMOBILES Recall Did Little Harm To Saturn's Rep

Saturn Corp.'s good reputation is intact despite the huge recall it announced last week, according to a survey of people who intend to buy a car in the next year.

Half the 121 people in the telephone survey, which was done last weekend, said their views about the General Motors Corp. subsidiary were unchanged because of the recall, said the pollsters, M.O.R.-PACE of Farmington Hills, Mich. Another 27 percent said their opinion of Saturn was more favorable and only 21 percent felt less kindly toward Saturn.

Saturn did not commission the survey, said Peter Haag, senior vice president of M.O.R. Newsday
