Letters Record Extremism Woman Praised Killing of Abortion Clinic Doctor

The woman accused of wounding an abortion doctor in Wichita, Kan., wrote frequently to the accused killer of an abortion doctor in Florida, calling him the "greatest hero of our time."

Rachelle R. Shannon, 37, of Grants Pass, Ore., was arrested Friday at the Oklahoma City airport just hours after Dr. George Tiller was wounded in Wichita. She was charged with attempted murder.

On Friday, the Pensacola News Journal obtained copies of 25 letters that Shannon had written to Michael F. Griffin, who is accused of fatally shooting Dr. David Gunn outside a Pensacola clinic March 10. Griffin's trial begins Sept. 20.

Those and other letters indicated that Shannon had became disillusioned with nonviolent abortion protests and was upset that some anti-abortion activists had condemned Gunn's shooting.

She wrote to John Burt, who was leading an anti-abortion protest on the day Gunn was shot, "It's sad to see so many pro-life Christians acting as though Michael Griffin had shot Mother Teresa. …
