EVERY NOW and then, fashion takes a basic item and imbues it with an almost magical quality, a heightening of style that turns an ordinary piece of clothing into an extraordinary of-the-moment item.

Basics that have had their 15 minutes of fashion fame include baseball caps, vests, cardigans and the little black dress.

Now fashion has seized upon the white shirt, and the fashion-conscious will wear a lot of hanging shirttails and dangling cuffs this fall.

This most basic wardrobe staple is now the hot article. In their fall collections, Donna Karan, Bill Blass, Isaac Mizrahi and every other designer of note employed white blouses to accessorize their fashions, many of which were modeled after looks from the past.

But long before those fall designer duds arrived in the stores, manufacturers and chain-store private labels were whipping up their versions of the new white shirts in record time and getting them in the stores.
