Higginbotham Paces Senior Amateur Qualifying

As darkness set in last Friday, Jerry Higginbotham finished his second round ever at Glen Echo Country Club. He was preparing for Tuesday's qualifying for the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.

He had played the course years ago but wanted to take some notes and study the greens. He was glad he prepared.

The greens at Glen Echo, like many in the area, are thin and worn due to the heat, humidity and lack of ventilation.

Thanks in part to his preparation, Higginbotham shot a 2-over-par 73, the low score Tuesday. Ron Boyce of Jefferson City shot 74 and Gerald McFerren, who has residences in Austin, Texas, and St. Louis, shot 76.

All three qualify for the U.S. Senior Amateur, Sept. 20-25 at Farmington C.C., in Charlottesville, Va.

Pat Keeley is the No. 1 alternate after shooting 77. Frank Furlong, the No. 2 alternate, shot 78 and No. 3 alternate David Shannahan, shot 78.

Higginbotham, a retired administrator in the St. Louis County Special School District, was the last golfer to start the competition. …
