WORK RELATIONS Male Bosses Favored, But By Smaller Margin If you were taking a new job and had your choice of a boss, would you prefer to work for a man or a woman?

More people choose a man boss than choose a woman, but the margin favoring men is getting smaller, a Gallup poll shows.

Some scores: 39 percent of the people asked said they preferred a male; 22 percent preferred a female. That's about 2 to 1.

Ten years ago, the percentages were 46 to 12 in favor of men. That's about 4 to 1.

Forty years ago, 66 percent said they favored a male boss; only 5 percent chose a female. That's 13 to 1.

Women say they prefer a male boss over a female by a margin of 44 to 29 percent. Men vote for the male by a margin of 33 to 16 percent.

About half of the men polled (49 percent) say the sex of the boss is not important. Only a fourth of the women (24 percent) take that view.

The different views don't seem to depend so much on sex as on age. By a margin of 61 to 17 percent (about 4 to 1) young women under 30 say they want a female boss. The margin is about the same for women over 50 but it's turned around. By 4 to 1 they want a male boss. Los Angeles Times Syndicate
