Pinch of Luck Could Help Royer

Infielder Stan Royer says he realizes he has to show Cardinals manager Joe Torre he can be an effective pinch-hitter if he is going to be in the picture for 1994. Royer is two for eight thus far in the pinch.

"I have to find something that works for me," said Royer, who batted .292 with 16 homer and 52 RBIs at Class AAA Louisville. "It's tough, because I've been a regular player ever since I started playing baseball. But I have to be able to perform off the bench.

"I did it in spring training, but that's different than doing it now."

Outfielder Brian Jordan was not supposed to play anymore this season, but he appeared in Sunday's 7-6 victory over the Giants at Busch Stadium. Jordan entered the game defensively because Rod Brewer's back stiffened up. The sore-shouldered Jordan batted in the eighth inning.

"I thought about bunting," said Jordan, who is to undergo tests on his left shoulder today and Wednesday. …
