Lady Lions Learn Lesson from Top-Ranked Team

Article excerpt

Playing in Jackson, Miss., the Lady Lions of Lindenwood beat West Florida 8-0 Saturday and lost 2-0 to Lynn (Fla.) Sunday. Lynn is the defending National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics champion and is ranked No. 1 in the NAIA's preseason poll.

Lindenwood was ranked third.

"Losing 2-0 sounds like we got blown out, but that wasn't the case at all," Lady Lions coach Debbie Washburn said. "Even though we played the game without a couple of starters, I thought we played a good game.

"Lynn dominated the first half and we played tentatively. But we came out and really played well at the start of the second half."

But Lynn picked up a couple of goals midway through the second half for the victory.

"Their first goal came on a great cross and header," Washburn said. "We pushed up and they got another goal off a corner kick.

"But we had our chances. I was pleased with the way we played and the progress we made over the weekend.

"We learned that we could play with Lynn and now we have a better idea of what it takes to be a top-level team."

The Lady Lions coasted against West Florida.

Jamie Casillas led the way with three goals. April Bell, Caryn Chasteen, Julie Dempsey, Krista Neidenbach and Jennifer Siess had the other Lindenwood goals.

Kris Tebbe and Linda Thompson split time in the shutout.

"It was a great way to start the season," Washburn said. "We got a chance to play a lot of people and we really played well.

"And it's nice having Jamie Casillas on our side. With Jamie, Krista Neidenbach, Jen Siess and April Bell up top, we have a lot more speed than we've had in the past."

Lindenwood returns to action Friday, playing host to William Woods in a 7 p.m. game. The Lady Lions play 5:30 p.m. Saturday against visiting CBC of Memphis.

The Lady Lions' JV team opened its season Saturday with a 2-1 victory over a very good University of Michigan club team. …
