Umsl Opens Season by Booting Washington U

At 5 feet 5 and 130 pounds, sophomore Todd Rick doesn't need more than half a locker at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

But Rick occupied a lot on space on UMSL's Don Dallas Soccer Field on Wednesday night. He scored a goal, had an assist and made a save as the Rivermen opened their season with a 3-1 victory over Washington University (2-1).

Rick helped set up UMSL's first goal, by Robert Emerson in the 26th minute, and scored the third goal in the 70th minute.

Before, after and between, he made some nice defensive plays from his unofficial position of "roamer." He pressured Bears goalie Tim Stewart into a hurried kick that bounced off Rick's chest and just missed ricocheting into the goal. Minutes later at the other end of the field, he used his body to block a jarring shot.

UMSL coach Tom Redmond, facing a rebuilding year, has given Rick wide latitude in determining his position. He lets him play where he feels he can do the most good.

"We played our regular 4-4-2 in the three exhibition games and probably didn't get a total of 12 shots," Redmond said. …
