FRIDAY'S FORAYS: Just eight months after he left office, former Guv. John Ashcroft is back raising money for a new campaign - most likely for the U.S. Senate. More than 150 bellied up with some bucks Tuesday night at the home of Cicardi Bruce Jr. That first family of festive fund-raisers were at the helm - Jane and Whitney Harris. . . .

Another U.S. Senate hopeful, Demo Steve Carroll, was spotted earlier lunching with former Clinton and Boz campaigner David Shelton at the Shell Cafe. . . .

In the media arena, the big buzz is about St. Louis 'Toons, a monthly newspaper due to hit the freebie stands later this month. Publishers are Daniel White and Pete Dosic. The preview issue's cover is adorned with a cartoon by Jack Ohman, who depicts the front of a van with the yellow triangular sign: "Baby, baby's biological parents, baby's legal team, baby's judge ON BOARD." . . .

Hail to the newly elected trustees of the Missouri Historical Society: Charles S. Betz, Dr. John H. Gladney, Jake A. Larimer, David Mason and Robert W. Staley. After the elections, Andrew Hurley, assistant prof of history at the University of Missouri at St. Louis, was selected winner of the 1993 James Neal Primm Award.

NOW, THEN: Kelly Brinkman is the new director of Logan College's clinic in St. Charles. Brinkman not only has fingers of steel but artistic talent. She has penned a musical comedy about physical education, ergonomics and chiropractic for the college's upcoming centennial celebration. She makes house calls, volunteers treatment for geriatrics and frequently turns a social party into a lively exercise clinic. . . .

People who turn out for those big-band swing-music dances would be amazed to learn that one of their favorite female warblers began back in the days of Helen O'Connell and Peggy Lee. She's Lorraine May, who may look like any other young singer on the bandstand, but she's in her 60s and proud of it. …
