I am among those to whom the Almighty confides absolutely nothing about His political agenda; so for me, a clash among those claiming superior access to those high preferences is always fascinating. Such a clash occurred in Washington when David Wilhelm, new chairman of the Democratic National Committee, addressed the Rev. Pat Robertson's Christian Coalition.

As a well-read young man from the Bible Belt, Wilhelm knows what the Scriptures say about grievous words. But he nonetheless gave Robertson's flock a tongue-lashing. He scolded them for putting "mean-spirited, misleading" television commercials on the air and for offering "aid and comfort to the economic elites."

And that wasn't all. He declared that "you can be a good Christian and support a woman's right to choose (abortion)" and that "God loves and accepts all his children, regardless of differences among us, including sexual orientation."

The resounding boos and catcalls suggested that Wilhelm's jabs had hurt, or at least irritated, for indeed the Christian right has made a full-time obsession of opposing abortion and all efforts to broaden the civil rights of homosexuals.

The values of Democrats, said the Democratic chairman, are "at least as richly informed by religious beliefs" as those of Republicans. And besides, God is "an independent." Wilhelm did not say how he knows. …
