Dear Al: We decided to wait another year before replacing the kids' old swing set. Among the things that we did fix, however, were the chains that hold the swings. They had become rusty and had the obvious problems of catching our girls' fingers and hair in them. We took pieces of an old garden hose and pulled the chains through them. The pieces of hose we used were four feet long each. Now the kids grab the hose instead of having to handle the rusty old chains. They seem to appreciate it and don't get hurt as often.

Sanding is an important part of woodworking. It gives your project a finished look and a smooth feel. Plain sandpaper wears out pretty fast without a sturdy backing, so try wrapping it around a block of wood to keep it from tearing and breaking as much.
