City's NFL Group Gives League Panel Game Plan John Connelly Is New Investor, Source Says

The premium seats are selling. We've added a new investor. We want an expansion team.

That, in a nutshell, was St. Louis' sales pitch Tuesday to the National Football League in a 90-minute presentation to the league's expansion and finance committees.

A source confirmed Tuesday night that the new investor in the St. Louis NFL Partnership is Pittsburgh businessman John E. Connelly, who owns the Admiral on the St. Louis riverfront.

"We feel very good about everything we presented today," said Jerry Clinton, chairman and chief executive of the St. Louis partnership. "We get a feeling that the people who were listening to us were more than satisfied."

In the closed-door meeting, Clinton told the group of club owners that St. Louis was approaching a sellout in club seats. He pointed out that St. Louis had a $1.4-million pledge from Civic Progress to cover any shortfall in premium-seat sales.

"I'm looking to have word very soon that it's a soldout situation as far as our club seats are concerned," Clinton said Tuesday. "We have maybe a dozen luxury boxes to sell."

After reporting a club-seat sellout Sept. 3 in the league's premium seat campaign, Clinton told the Post-Dispatch last week that 760 purchasers had reneged on their commitments.

On Tuesday he said the partnership had since sold several hundred additional club seats. He also noted that of the 6,252 club seats that will be in the domed stadium now under construction, 250 were being reserved for single-game promotions and 170 were being reserved for wheelchair access. Those two blocs of seats shouldn't be included in the premium-seat sales total, Clinton said.

"So what was perceived as kind of a bad-looking situation wasn't really that bad after all," Clinton said. …
