State Police Captain on Loan to East St. Louis for One Year

Gov. Jim Edgar provided some crime-fighting help Wednesday for East St. Louis, which has one of the highest per capita crime rates in the nation.

Edgar announced that a State Police captain will be on loan for a year to help the city's Police Department.

In other actions taken Wednesday to bolster police services:

Edgar gave Mayor Gordon D. Bush the keys to a fleet of additional patrol cars. The cars - seven 1987 and 1988 Chevrolet Caprices that had belonged to State Police - arrived a little after noon. That brought to 34 the number of cars the state has given the city in recent years, Bush said.

"Before two years ago, we were lucky to have five to seven cars per shift in the patrol division," Police Chief Isadore Chambers said.

Bush swore in eight officers, increasing the force to 72.

And Bush announced that the police would begin following through on more than 150 recommendations from a report delivered to the city earlier this year by outside police consultants. …
