Phantastic Audience Gives Rave Reviews to `Phantom of the Opera'

They came, they saw, they liked it.

Some walked out wiping tears from their eyes. Some were quiet, with faces full of wonder and awe. Some laughed in delight. Some sang sotto voce, some sang boldly.

If there were any unhappy audience members at the Fox Theatre Sunday afternoon, they slipped out the side door after the matinee showing of Andrew Lloyd Webber's version of Gaston Leroux's classic "The Phantom of the Opera."

The long-awaited show opened Sunday night after two previews and a benefit performance. It runs through Nov. 6. Fox officials say they have sold 90 percent of the tickets.

Joan Kaschmitter of Maryland Heights was singing "The Music of the Night" on her way through the lobby.

"I enjoyed it! It was fun," she said. "And I'm not the only one who was singing." She pointed to her friend Tom Parker. "He was doing the Phantom's love soliloquy in the hall."

Parker, who lives in Springfield, Ill., admitted he was.

"I saw the show in Chicago, and this production is just as good. …
