Campaign Running Ahead of Last Year's Gifts, Pledges Total $23.3 Million, Officials Say

With gifts and pledges totaling $23.3 million, the United Way campaign is 48 percent of the way toward its $49 million goal, campaign chairman Richard A. Liddy announced Monday.

"This is 3 percent more than we raised at this time last year," Liddy told about 200 campaign volunteers at a reception at Mathews-Dickey Boys' Club, 4245 North Kingshighway. Several hundred boys and girls served by the club were guests at the meeting.

"The results are encouraging so far," said Liddy, president and chief executive of General American Life Insurance Co. But the campaign needs about 5 percent more than last year to offset job losses from plant closings, layoffs and this summer's flood.

The flood raised public awareness of the disadvantaged, but givers may think their needs are subsiding with the floodwater, campaign officials cautioned.

Last year's campaign ended about $800,000 short of its $51 million goal. The goal this year was reduced, in part because a federal charitable campaign is running independently of the United Way effort for the first time. …
