Petrofsky's famous bagels soon will come to customers via Quaker Oats Co.

The Minneapolis-based firm said Tuesday it has bought the privately held Petrofsky's Bakery Products in Maryland Heights.

"We're excited about the acquisition," said Robert Petrofsky, vice president of the firm. "This will allow us to increase our volume and to better serve our customers with better quality products."

Petrofsky's specializes in frozen bagels and other frozen specialty breads. The products are sold primarily to grocery chain in-store retail bakeries. The company will become part of Quaker's Food Services unit, which reported fiscal 1993 sales of $470 million.

Neither Quaker Oats nor Petrofsky revealed the purchase price.

Quaker Oats bought only the North American business; not Petrofsky's international business, Petrofsky said. Petrofsky's Bakery Products began shipping frozen bagels to Japan in the mid-'80s. In 1990, the firm started shipping frozen bagel dough so customers could see the product being made. …
