BROWN BAGGED

Vinny Testaverde no longer is a reliever. Cleveland Browns coach Bill Belichick, after benching Bernie Kosar for ineffectiveness for the third consecutive game, said Sunday that Testaverde would be his starter in Cincinnati next week.

"He has played well in all seven games that he's played for us this year, and I'm going to give him an opportunity to be a quarterback," Belichick said.

The Browns (3-2) signed Testaverde as a free agent during the offseason to back up Kosar, who just signed a seven-year, $27 million contract last week. But in each of the last three games, Cleveland's offense has struggled, and Kosar has taken the heat.

New England quarterback Drew Bledsoe suffered a sprained ligament in his left knee.

Miami lost linebacker John Offerdahl to a dislocated shoulder.

Indianapolis defensive tackle Steve Emtman suffered torn ligaments and tendons in his right knee. He might be lost for the season. Teammate Chris Goode, a defensive back, was carried off the field on a stretcher because of a sprained neck. Club officials said he was able to move his hands.

San Diego quarterback John Friesz suffered a mild concussion when tackled by Pittsburgh's Kevin Greene, a Granite City native.

The Jets lost three key players. Running back Blair Thomas suffered a hamstring injury; center Jim Sweeney reaggravated an ankle sprain; and wide receiver Rob Moore suffered a twisted knee. …
