Warren County officials have reopened all but one of the 23 roads closed during the summer flood.

Although the roads are open, officials said it would be a long time before the damage was repaired.

Only Augusta Bottom Road, which links Augusta and Washington, remains closed. That road is built atop a levee that ruptured during the flood. The cost of repairing the road is more than $1.5 million. A 58-foot deep hole cutting all the way across the levee severed the road.

Meanwhile, the county's seven road workers have been putting in overtime to repair the other flood-damaged roads.

"We're short on equipment and we're short on men," Associate Commissioner Gilbert Groeper said.

Road crews have been working almost exclusively to repair damage since floodwater began to recede in July. Other projects are on hold.

Not that money was available for other projects, Groeper said.

The county's $1.1 million road budget and $1.3 million operating budget already was committed, and the county recently had to borrow $30,000 to cover operating expenses. …
