Barbara Bush was back in Washington over the weekend - this time, on her terms.

There was no media herd, no unsavory politicking and no comment on the new occupants of the White House.

Finally, the wife of the former president could move and speak freely in the city she called home for 25 years.

It was above all a chance to revisit one of the passions of her private and public life: volunteerism.

The former first lady returned to the nation's capital over the weekend to honor the volunteer service of 50 winners of the 1993 Maxwell House Real Heroes award.

Mrs. Bush arrived Friday night and stayed with two of her children.

Sunday morning, she headed back to her new life and home in Houston, and to George Bush.

"People laugh at me, but I have loved that man more than life itself for a long, long time," she said. …
