Miami's New Starting Quarterback Feels Need to Lead

Article excerpt

Five games too late.

That's what Dennis Erickson is really saying. He has talked a lot about his quarterback change, talked a lot about his thinking behind it, talked and talked of how it's not anything Frank Costa has done but what Ryan Collins can do.

But what is he saying?

The decision comes five games too late. That's what he's saying. He should have made it in April. Collins should have been the quarterback all along.

Erickson doesn't make many mistakes. He is 48-5 coaching at the University of Miami and has two national college football titles in four years. Anyone who doesn't understand that he is one of the truly bright things to happen in South Florida sports doesn't understand what he's accomplished.

But he missed this one months ago when he misread what this team needed. He may keep missing it, too, if he begins exchanging quarterbacks as he says he may.

Collins should be in for good now, for better or worse, and eventually it will be much better. They aren't this year. No one go-to receiver has developed, much less the two or three of recent years. This is in good part why Miami's offense hasn't been what it usually is.

This isn't Costa's fault. Any other year, he could be Gino Torretta, letting the receivers make the big plays, and just throwing the ball to them would be enough.

This season, Collins does what this team needs most, and he should have been doing it all along. …
