Newton Sets Mark in Loss; Lindenwood Gets First Win

Matt Newton became the NCAA Division III career leader in receptions by hauling in 13 passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns, but it wasn't enough as Principia lost at home 35-29 to Earlham on Saturday afternoon.

Mike Thompson scored on a 16-yard run early in the fourth quarter to break a 21-21 tie and spark Earlham, of Richmond, Ind. Earlham's James Barber rushed for 114 yards and three touchdowns.

Newton caught TD passes of 3, 9 and 29 yards and now has 264 receptions, six more than Bill Stromberg made for Johns Hopkins in his career that ended in 1981.

Newton has caught 74 passes for 760 yards and nine touchdowns this season. He is 37 catches short of the overall NCAA receptions record, held by Mississippi Valley State's Jerry Rice. Principia has two games remaining. Lindenwood 10, St. Xavier 0

Shawn Curtis caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Chris Floyd early in the third quarter and Lindenwood's defense shut down visiting St. Xavier as the Lions made their homecoming a good one by recording their first victory of the season. …
