Dear Dr. Fox: My 3-year-old Lab-setter mix was 1 year old when we got her at the animal shelter. She's a bit hyper, but we still love her. My problem is that she has become my shadow. In fact, I've named her Shadow.

When I'm in my bedroom and my son comes in to talk to me or even when he just passes my door to go to his room, Shadow lunges toward the door ready to attack him.

He has yelled at her and sprayed her with water, but nothing works. When I yell at her, she stops but only momentarily. My son says she's different when I'm not home.

Also, Shadow constantly scratches her nose to the point where it is now raw and sometimes bloody. The vet has prescribed Prednisone for her, but I don't want to keep her on it because I fear its long-term effects. Incidentally, I notice that as soon as she goes out into our back yard, she rubs her nose in the grass. …
