Voters' `No' May Alter Plan for Job of Marshal

Valley Park aldermen might have to reconsider plans to downgrade the position of marshal after voters overwhelming said they would like to continue electing the official, says Mayor Fred Palmer Jr.

On Tuesday, voters rejected a proposal that the mayor and aldermen appoint a police chief. The vote was 546 against and 204 in favor.

The aldermen have adopted a plan to hire a police administrator to run the police department. The new official would be selected after municipal elections next April when voters will be electing a mayor, a marshal and half the members of the Board of Aldermen.

Instead of running the department, the marshal would become an advisor on law enforcement. The position's salary would be cut to $5,000 a year. The aldermen recommended the police administrator be paid $35,000 a year. The officials hiring the administrator would set the salary.

"Leaders have to listen to the people," Palmer said. The aldermen may want to re-evaluate their plan, he said. …
