Several Groups Discuss Mental Health Disorders

Article excerpt

Dear Open Mind: While there has been much published lately about enlightening the public on mental health disorders, why are there no groups meeting to discuss current topics that affect mental health/mental illness in daily living situations?

You are correct in your observation about recent publicity on mental health issues. Depression, learning disorders and panic attacks have received a fair amount of media coverage. The need to provide treatment benefits for mental illness is a major component of health-care reform; thus, we hear more about mental health concerns in this context, as well.

Several groups in the community provide mental health information. Alexian Brothers Hospital, in conjunction with the Mental Health Association, is beginning a new Mental Wellness Information Series. The first seminar will consider "Changing Seasons/Changing Moods; All About Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)." The speaker will be T. Nick Fenger, Ph.D., an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of SAD. This program will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in the hospital's Peterson Auditorium, 3933 South Broadway. To register or for more information, call 865-7963. To learn more about other programs, call the Mental Health Association at 773-1399. Charles M. Donahue, M.Div.
