Jimmy Johnson got one of his "Miami boys" as insurance for another Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl run, signing Bernie Kosar on Wednesday to a one-year deal as a backup to injured Troy Aikman.

Kosar, who was cut unexpectedly Monday by the Cleveland Browns, made it clear he's not after Aikman's job and just wants a chance at a Super Bowl ring. Three times he led the Browns to the AFC title game only to lose.

"There's no question Troy Aikman is one of the most brilliant quarterbacks in the league and no way am I here competing for his job," Kosar said. "The shot at a Super Bowl ring was a big factor why I came to Dallas."

Miami, Kansas City and Philadelphia tried to woo Kosar, but his loyalty to his old college coach, Johnson, was too strong.

"Loyalty means a lot to me," said Kosar, who turns 30 later this month. "They showed a lot of confidence and trust in me."

Browns: One native son replaced another when Tom Tupa arrived to take Kosar's place on Cleveland's roster. Tupa, 27, grew up a Browns fan in suburban Cleveland and was a four-year letterman at quarterback and punter for Ohio State.

Eagles: Philadelphia claimed tackle William "Refrigerator" Perry in an effort to bolster their leaky run defense.

The Chicago Bears waived the 335-pound Perry on Tuesday after nine years with the team. He was fourth among active Bears with 456 tackles, including eight this year. He trailed only Richard Dent in sacks with 28 1/2, none this season.

Eagles coach Rich Kotite said Perry would play Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

Cardinals: Eric Swann, the Phoenix Cardinals' most dominant defensive lineman, will miss the rest of the season after arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage in his right knee. …
