BRITAIN Press Seeks Tighter Ethics Enforcement

Britain's press watchdog suggested Friday increasing its disciplinary powers to ward off threats of government curbs, after a furor over secretly taken pictures of Diana, Princess of Wales, exercising in a gymnasium.

The Press Complaints Commission, a self-regulatory body made up mainly of newspaper editors, proposed that editors who breached the code of practice on privacy should be dismissed. The group also was pressing for the code to be included in the employment contracts of all journalists.

Last weekend, the Sunday Mirror published photographs showing Diana in a leotard on an exercise machine at a gym in London. That provoked a torrent of criticism from other papers and government threats to introduce a privacy law.

The princess sued the Mirror group and demanded the return of all the pictures, which were taken without her knowledge by a hidden camera. Reuters

Talks in Sarajevo Friday yielded promises by Croatian and Bosnian government leaders to try to stop fighting in Bosnia and press the West to use armed force to protect aid convoys.

Bosnian Prime Minister Haris Silajdzic and Croatian Foreign Minister Mate Granic announced the steps after five hours of talks.

It was the first time a senior official from Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, had set foot in Sarajevo since Bosnia's war began 19 months ago.

Meanwhile, Croatian radio reported a Muslim assault on Kiseljak. But a spokesman for the U.N. Protection Force said the Croat Defense Council had launched the offensive with tank and artillery support from the Serbs. Reuters
