Getting around without a car may take nothing more than a telephone call - and some time.

For those 60 and older:

The County Older Residents Program, or CORP, in St. Louis County, offers free rides to hospitals, doctors, banks and the grocery. Donations accepted. Call at least three days in advance: 889-3516.

Older Adults Transportation Service, or OATS, offers rides to medical appointments and the grocery. Riders pay what they can. Call at least four days ahead. St. Louis County residents, call 962-0808. Residents of Franklin, Jefferson or St. Charles counties, call 800-243-6060.

The St. Louis Area Agency on Aging provides rides to medical appointments, necessary business and shopping. Free, but donations welcome. Riders should call one week ahead except in an emergency. The number is 383-4600.

The Southwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging offers rides to medical appointments and shopping through several agencies in Madison, St. Clair, Monroe, Randolph, Clinton and Washington counties. …
