Exchange Programs with Russia, Japan Set at Country Day

Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School recently began exchange programs with educational institutions and educators in Russia and Japan, according to school spokeswoman Joni Albrecht.

Albrecht said the school's Russian teacher, Nadia Danett, spent the past year developing a relationship with The City College in Samara, Russia. Samara is situated about 650 miles southeast of Moscow.

Samara is the latest city in St. Louis' Sister City Program. In this connection, Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School has been chosen to serve as a model school for the Russian institution, Albrecht said.

Albrecht said that all children in Russia now attend public schools. She said The City College in Samara is the first school attempting private education since the breakup of the Soviet Union. The school is creating its own curriculum to provide education for students from first grade through college, she said.

Albrecht quoted Russian teacher Danett as saying, "I am very proud that (Mary Institute and Country Day School) has been chosen to serve as a model school for the first private school in Russia. …
