Golfer Who Battled Cancer For Four Years Dies At 28

Heather Farr, a professional golfer who inspired fans with her courageous battle to return to the game after being stricken with cancer at age 24, died Saturday in Scottsdale, Ariz. She was 28.

On Nov. 11, Ms. Farr underwent surgery to relieve a brain hemorrhage. Six days later, her condition was downgraded from fair to critical.

Her indefatigable nature and relentlessly upbeat attitude won Ms. Farr many friends on the competitive LPGA circuit. Twelve players were at the hospital when she died.

Ms. Farr, a Phoenix native, was a two-time All-America golfer at Arizona State and became the youngest player in the history of the LPGA to qualify for the Tour at age 20 in 1986.

After winning $170,038 in 3 1/2 years, Ms. Farr was diagnosed with breast cancer on July 3, 1989. She underwent more than 15 operations, ranging from a radical mastectomy to breast reconstruction to bone marrow transplants and spinal surgery.

In an interview last year, Farr characterized her philosophy on dealing with all of her problems. "You play through it," she said. "That's what you do. You just play through it."

Steffi Graf completed the year as the No. 1 women's player by winning the Virginia Slims Championships in New York, 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 over Arantxa Sanchez Vicario. The title was worth $250,000.
