How to Help Vulnerable Kids Deal with the Stress

THE HOLIDAYS should be the happiest days of all for children. Often they are not, particularly when the children are from broken homes or blended homes.

According to Patti Rosenthal, executive director of Kids in the Middle, the child may miss the other biological parent, particularly when he or she is out of town. No matter how costly the presents and festivals, the child needs to reach out to the missing parent.

"The mother or father may be caught up in the excitement of a second marriage, making a new home with someone else, planning new holiday traditions, but the child of the former marriage may not really be a part of this," Rosenthal said. "A phone call is a big help. The child needs the other biological parent."

Kids in the Middle works with children from single-parent homes or blended-family homes.

As Rosenthal said, "One of the things we really stress is the kid's feelings, and getting the kid to talk about it. They are not the ones who chose the divorce, the are not the ones who chose to remarry. …
