Decision on Mizzou Ad on Hold; Tobin Still Coach Front-Runner

Article excerpt

With University of Missouri chancellor Charles Kiesler occupied by the Board of Curators and with outgoing athletic director Dan Devine out of town most of the week, chances of Devine's successor being named by today have dwindled.

Kiesler, whose meeting with the curators on Thursday extended into today, said it "would be nice" to announce it by the end of the week. The finalists are Joe Castiglione, the MU associate AD; Jim Hart, AD at Southern Illinois-Carbondale; and Kellen Winslow, attorney, announcer and former MU football star.

MU sources on Thursday suggested a decision would be more likely to arrive next week. MU also is seeking a replacement for football coach Bob Stull, who resigned last week to be named assistant athletic director.

The leading candidate to replace Stull apparently remains Vince Tobin, the former All-Big Eight defensive back and former MU assistant who most recently was defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears. There has been resistance to Tobin in St. Louis - largely because he hasn't been a head coach and hasn't been in the collegiate game since 1976 - but sources said Thursday that Tobin is the only applicant scheduled for a formal interview.

Devine, who was in New York for five days to take part in National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame ceremonies, has been unavailable for comment. But among those he spoke with in New York was former MU star and current New York Jets coach Johnny Roland, who emphatically backs Tobin.

Tobin did not return a phone message on Thursday, but he has acknowledged that he has a staff in mind. Among those likely to be offered job: former MU assistant Carl Reese, now at Vanderbilt; former MU assistant Dick Jamieson, now at Rutgers; former MU and Affton High player Steve Brickey, now at Texas Christian, and former MU graduate assistant Pete Hoener, also at TCU.

Other sources on Thursday dispelled rumors and added wrinkles:

Larry Smith, former coach at Arizona and Southern Cal, has a formal interview pending; former Clemson coach Ken Hatfield absolutely is not interested; West Virginia coach Don Nehlen, after several chats with Devine, has told him no. …
