Giving to the 100 Neediest Cases is a holiday tradition for some St. Louis area residents. For 14 years, for example, Ruth Stroble has devoted her time and energy in matching contributions, particularly of items like appliances, with the people who need them the most. For the past nine years, a woman named Mary Ellen has volunteered at the offices of the campaign and has "adopted" cases she wants to help. For four years, Brad Neel of Leisure Lawn said, the company has used its drivers and trucks to pick up and deliver heavy gifts.

These people are but a fraction of the countless number of those who believe that the holiday season is a time to share with others less fortunate - and who demonstrate that concern with a donation to the 100 Neediest Cases. Last year, the campaign raised $1.2 million in cash plus thousands of dollars in items, ranging from food to furniture. That gave more than 12,000 families a happier holiday than they might have had otherwise. …
