Dear Dr. Fox: I recently adopted a marvelous dog that I've named Rusty because of his color. I wouldn't want anything to happen to him, so I'm trying to take every precaution. What kind of photo is best for identification?

Use a plain background, such as a wall or the outside of your house. If you shoot down on the animal, you will not get a clear picture. Put your pet on a table or bench, or get down on your knees when shooting. Take at least two pictures: One of them should be the animal in profile, which will give an idea of its shape. The other should be with the animal facing you. You also might want to take a close-up of its face.
