Party Gives West Altonians a Hint of Normal Holidays

Courtney Bextermueller and her family decorated their house in West Alton with candy canes on the sidewalk, garland on the handrails of the porch and ribbon around the tree.

But the 12-year-old and her family will spend Christmas in an apartment in north St. Louis County. Flooding chased the family from their house this summer, and they have been unable to return.

"To move back in my house is all I want for Christmas," Courtney said.

Many former residents of West Alton share Courtney's wish. They remain in apartments and other people's homes since floodwater invaded their town in St. Charles County.

Tuesday, the Salvation Army threw a Christmas party for flood victims from West Alton. The party was at the Saale Brothers store in West Alton, which is now a distribution center for flood aid.

Amy Baker, 19, and her 11-month-old daughter, Samantha, have since moved back into her home on Saale Road in West Alton. One of Baker's three sisters has been unable to return to her home in West Alton and plans to move in with Baker. …
