Dear Heloise: I remember reading in your column several years ago that there was a painless drug for having a pet put to sleep. I recall that another drug frequently used does cause suffering for the animal.

Our beloved Irish setter is getting frail and we want to be prepared in case she begins to suffer.

I know how you're feeling. We had to make the decision to euthanize my little old Chihuahua, Tequila, many years ago. Her kidneys failed and unfortunately there was no hope for recovery. As heartbreaking as it was, I knew it was time.

I chose to be with her, and it was comforting to know that she didn't feel any pain at all. I patted her head and I was the last thing she saw as she simply closed her eyes and fell asleep.

Dr. Tom Vice, our veterinarian, feels no animal should suffer, and I agree. …
