Marsha Brewer-Stewart was not stupid, her daughter says, she just believed she could help her husband recover from alcoholism and mental problems.

That is why she laid out $10,000 to bail him out of jail seven months ago, after he was accused of slashing her throat.

Authorities say it was a fatal mistake.

They charged Gregory Stewart, 38, with fatally stabbing his wife Sunday at the couple's town house in Naperville, Ill.

"He was sick. He was an alcoholic, and he had some sort of mental problem," said Leigh Brewer, the victim's daughter by a previous marriage. "My mom wanted to stay with him and help him through it, and she believed that if she stayed with him, she could help him get better."

Stewart was a quiet, non-menacing husband with a string of suicide attempts and drinking problems that long preceded the couple's marriage last year, the daughter said Tuesday in a telephone interview from Naperville.

Stewart's attorney, Dan Lyons, declined to comment.

The couple met about four years ago, and Stewart went to Alcoholics Anonymous and quit drinking for a while before he began backsliding, Brewer said. …
