Ewen Feels like He Is Lucky Duck

Article excerpt

As an enforcer for the Mighty Ducks, Todd Ewen uses his fists to intimidate. But don't let his tough-guy image fool you. Off the ice, he is as easy-going and likable as one of Disney's characters.

In fact, Ewen has created some characters of his own. He is working on a children's book entitled "A Frog Named Hop."

The story includes a dragonfly named Whisper and a dragon called Taller. Ewen is writing the text and doing illustrations.

This is his first venture into children's literature but Ewen is no stranger to art. He creates little figures out of trainer's tape. On display in the Ducks' locker room is a six-inch goalie mask Ewen carefully constructed and painted.

He became interested in art as a child when his mother drew pictures of their family. He watched animated movies with interest. He studied at an arts college in Vancouver before he was drafted by Edmonton in 1984.

But it was the birth of son Tylor in 1990 that spurred dad's desire to write a children's book. After examining the market, Ewen wanted to try it. He scribbled down some sketches and pieced together a story, incorporating his philosophy.

"The story preaches morality, that it's OK to be different," Ewen said. "You watch TV and see that morality has been depreciated on everyone's agenda."

The process has not been as easy as Ewen anticipated.

"I realized there are a lot of different things that go into it. You can't have elaborate words or concepts a 3-year old doesn't understand. I began to understand how much a child could sponge in, but it's incredible how simple it has to be."

Picking up feedback from Tylor, Ewen has revised the book eight or nine times. He hopes to get it published in a few years.

Hop goes near the water and is joined by a dragonfly.

"Hi! My name is Whisper."

"Hello Whisper!" exclaimed Hop.

"I'm so glad you came to the water's edge today," said the dragonfly. "Your music makes me buzz with joy and reminds me of all the wonderful things around us."

As a member of the Mighty Ducks, Ewen is reminded of all the wonderful things around him. He is playing in the National Hockey League for a team that has turned third- and fourth-line players into stars. …
