ST. LOUIS BST White House Study Backs Milk Hormone

The Clinton administration has reaffirmed the safety of Monsanto Co.'s drug that increases cows' milk production.

"There is no evidence BST poses a health threat to humans or animals," says a draft version of a report by the White House Office of Management and Budget.

BST, or bovine somatotropin, was approved for marketing Nov. 5 by the Food and Drug Administration. But Congress negotiated a three-month delay in selling BST as one condition for passing President Bill Clinton's deficit reduction bill last year.

The report says that with BST, consumers will pay less for milk and federal subsidy programs will be cheaper. AP

***** NUTRITION SUPPLEMENTS Reliv' Sets Dividend At 1% Of Retail Sales

Reliv' International Inc. says it will pay dividends this year of about 1 percent of the retail value of its sales each quarter.

Reliv' sells its dietary supplements, sports beverages and weight-reduction products through a network of distributors, who pay about 55 percent of the suggested retail price of Reliv' products. The distributors sell the products directly to consumers.

Reliv's sales last year were approximately $26.4 million. The company had 9.5 million shares outstanding as of Sept. 30. A spokesman said the first dividend would be declared after Reliv' computes first-quarter results.

Ford Motor Co. is recalling another 1.1 million cars in 14 states and six Canadian provinces - including Illinois - to repair engine subframe mounts that are prone to corrosion in regions where vehicles are exposed to large amounts of road salts and moisture.

The recall affects Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable and Lincoln Continental cars made for the 1989- through early 1993-model year. …
