"BLACK HOLES AND BABY UNIVERSES & OTHER ESSAYS "By Stephen Hawking (4 hours, unabridged, BDD, $21.95)

Stephen Hawking, who was born on the 300th anniversary of the death of Galileo, and who now occupies Isaac Newton's chair as the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, is a remarkable individual. Almost totally incapacitated by Lou Gehrig's disease for more than 20 years, the theoretical physicist has done much to explain current scientific thought regarding man and Earth's position in the cosmos.

His "A Brief History of Time" has been translated into 33 languages and has sold more than 5.5 million copies. In his latest book, "Black Holes and Baby Universes," which is narrated wonderfully by Simon Prebble, Hawking discusses his youth, his family, the onset of the disease that has crippled him, and his struggle to teach himself mathematics.

In addition, he expands on his earlier work, relating with good humor how scientific theory "converges with - and diverges from - science fiction." For those among us who normally assume a blank stare at the thought of anything theoretical, scientific or mathematical, this book is a joy.

The brilliance of this work, which is read by ABC radio and television host Michael Jackson, is in the way the author takes complicated scientific thought and translates it into language that the average person can follow. …
