Lorena Bobbitt Can't Recall Cutting Husband, She Says

Lorena Bobbitt tearfully told a jury Friday that she could not remember the moment when she took a knife and cut off her husband's penis as he lay in bed.

She said under defense questioning that she acted after her husband, John, raped her - the final act in what she describes as a "reign of terror" by him during their four-year marriage. She testified that her head swirled with images of past abuse the night she said her husband raped her. Asked by a defense attorney whether she remembered cutting off his penis, she said, "No, I don't remember that."

She does not deny having cut off her husband's penis, but the defense is seeking to convince the jury of seven women and five men that she acted justifiably in a moment of insanity after years of beatings and rape.

Displaying the 9-inch, red-handled kitchen knife that Lorena Bobbitt used, prosecutor Mary Grace O'Brien asked on cross examination: "What were you thinking when you picked up the knife? . . . Did you think about cutting John?"

"No," Lorena Bobbitt again insisted, saying her mind was filled only with horrible, humiliating episodes from her four-year marriage.

Concluding two days of emotional testimony, Lorena Bobbitt, 24, a manicurist, described a life torn apart by her husband's violent outbursts, selfishness, infidelity and insults.

She said she endured being hit, having her hair pulled, humiliated in public about her looks and even taunted about needles "so big they were going to go through my bones" before an abortion that he insisted she have.

Lorena Bobbitt, a native of Ecuador, has pleaded innocent to a charge of malicious wounding, saying that years of abuse led to an irresistible impulse to strike back. She faces 20 years in prison and possible deportation if convicted. The trial has recessed until Tuesday because of Monday's holiday. …
