ILLINOIS ALTON Boil-Water Order Lifted For Downtown

Illinois-American Water Co. lifted its boil order late Friday for residents of downtown Alton. After a water main broke Thursday, the company asked customers there to boil water before drinking it.

Company spokesman Wayne F. Schlosser said the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency had tested the water and found no signs of contamination Friday.

Construction workers punctured a 20-inch water main Thursday. The line serves downtown Alton and nearby areas.

***** CENTRAL ILLINOIS Rise Of 11% Sought In Home Gas Rates

Natural gas prices could go up an average $6 a month for customers of Central Illinois Light Co. in Springfield.

The utility filed a request with the Illinois Commerce Commission on Friday for an 11 percent increase in residential natural gas rates, the first such request by the utility since 1990.

Businesses would see a 2 percent to 3 percent rate increase, under the company's proposal.

The rate change, if approved, would take effect by the end of the year. AP

Kenneth Boyle of Chatham has been elected chairman of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees.

Boyle, 56, is senior partner of the Springfield law firm of Boyle, Klingler & McClain.

He retired as director of the state's attorneys appellate prosecutor's office more than two years ago.

Boyle was elected Friday and succeeds Judith Calder of Glencoe, another Democrat, on the board, which has a 6-3 Democratic majority. …
