Recruit: Warriors' Ducar Bound for Northern Illinois

Andy Ducar's football career started slowly. Very slowly.

"I didn't start playing football until I was in high school - I grew up playing soccer," said Ducar, a senior at St. Charles West High. "My freshman year, it took me three games before I realized that you could use your hands on defense.

"At the end of that year, I told my dad that my goal was to be an honorable mention All-Gatewy Athletic Conference player."

But Ducar has far exceeded expectations. A two-time first-team all-league choice as a defensive lineman, Ducar gave an oral commitment to Division I Northern Illinois University last weekend.

Oral commitments are non-binding; national letter-of-intent signing day is Feb. 2.

"Playing Division I has been a goal of mine and now I'm going to get the opportunity. I'm really excited," said Ducar, who chose Northern over Southwest Missouri State in Springfield. "During my visit to Northern last weekend, I talked to about 11 players and they all seemed really excited about the direction of the program. They said that the coaching staff was aggressive and enthusiastic and that they made practices fun.

"It's an up-and-coming program. And I really like the school, too. There's a great campus and I'll be able to get a quality education. Northern just seems like the right place for me."

Ducar, who stands 6-feet-3 1/2 and weights 230 pounds, will red-shirt as a freshman. Signed as a defensive end, he hopes to compete for a starting spot the following season.

"I'll have a year to adjust to college and to bulk up a little bit," he said. "But I'm going to work hard and do everything I can to win the starting job. Between football, basketball and track, I've never really had a chance to work out regularly; I'm interested to see what that'll do for me."

Ducar plans to study secondary education and possibly economics or mathematics in college. Eventually, he'd like to teach and coach in high school.

"I'd love (St. Charles West coach Steve Stahl's) job," kidded Ducar. "Seriously, I owe all this to coach Stahl. He was at a coaching convention and showed my tape to some coaches. Northern Illinois was one of the teams that saw it and that's when they started recruiting me. …
