On the surface, little that's good appears to happen in Walnut Park, where 32 homicides were committed last year. Though this violence made the headlines, far more promising news is also beginning to seep out of this North Side neighborhood.

Walnut Park also is home to the Walbridge Caring Communities Program, one of the most progressive and promising responses ever offered any neighborhood beset by adverse social and economic forces.

St. Louisans will get a glimpse of the program's potential in a PBS documentary set to air Jan. 30. The program singles out Walbridge as one of six innovative, cost-effective programs responding to families and children at risk.

Walbridge stands out because it represents a progressive way to deliver prevention and intervention services to kids and adults. The school becomes the launching pad for reaching troubled youngsters and families before they are overwhelmed by crises. Walbridge gets most of its money from four state agencies - elementary and secondary education, health, mental health and social services. …
