Parents worried that the McDonnell Douglas Corp.'s day-care center may close packed a recent meeting of the Ferguson-Florissant School Board.

The day-care center, called McCare, has been housed since it was founded eight years ago in the school district's Caroline School at Airport Road and Interstate 170. About 200 children attend the center, which is a subsidiary of McDonnell Douglas.

In October, the district notified McCare of its intention to end the $1-a-year lease on the building, says Tim Kelsheimer, spokesman for the McCare Parents Organization. The lease expired in December.

"In December, we were notified that we have to vacate by March 1," Kelsheimer said. "There is no way to find a suitable place to relocate a day-care center for 200 children in three months. That's not enough time."

School District Superintendent Robert Fritz said many of the schools in the district were crowded and the district wants to move some alternative-education programs into the Caroline building. …
