Attorneys Say No Deal In Works To Free Tyson

Attorneys for Mike Tyson and the woman he was convicted of raping said Tuesday they have no plans for a deal aimed at getting the former heavyweight champion out of prison early.

WTHR-TV of Indianapolis reported that Tyson would admit the crime in return for prosecutors recommending his sentence be cut to time served. The station did not disclose its sources for the report. Tyson, a former heavyweight champion, was convicted in February 1992 of raping Rhode Island beauty pageant contestant Desiree Washington while she was in Indianapolis the previous summer. Tyson is serving a six-year sentence.

***** FOOTBALL Smith Is Sporting News' Player Of Year

The Sporting News named Dallas running back Emmitt Smith National Football League player of the year. The St. Louis-based publication also picked Los Angeles Rams running back Jerome Bettis as the league's top rookie and named Dan Reeves of the New York Giants as coach of the year.

Smith rushed for 1,486 yards and nine touchdowns. Bettis was second to Smith with 1,429 yards. Reeves guided the 11-5 Giants to a playoff appearance.

***** Esiason Replaces Montana For Pro Bowl

Boomer Esiason of the New York Jets was selected to replace Kansas City's Joe Montana for the Pro Bowl. Esiason completed 248 of 473 for 3,421 yards and 16 touchdowns. Montana was scratched from the game, scheduled for Feb. 6 in Honolulu, because of lingering effects from the concussion he suffered in Sunday's AFC championship game.
