S.G. Adams to Close Its Remaining Stores Longtime Stationery Retailer Targeting Commercial Sales

Article excerpt

S.G. Adams Co. a longtime stationery house here with a specialty in maps - is charting a new course for itself that will remove its retail shops from the landscape.

The company will soon close its three remaining stationery and office-supply stores so that it can concentrate on commercial sales, Wayne Huck, vice president of finance, said Thursday.

The closings include a retail landmark in downtown St. Louis - the store at 10th and Olive streets. S.G. Adams has anchored the southeast corner of that intersection since 1941.

As its retail stores close, "we will put more salesmen on the street and go after the enormously large commercial market in this area," he said.

The company, which now has a sales force of 14, hopes to add about seven more to that staff, he said. The crew, just as before, will be selling office supplies, office furniture and printing.

Kay Stearns, vice president of operations, added that Adams was not ruling out a return to the retail scene. …
