Japan Set to Go Nuclear, Paper Says

Japan has all the parts for a nuclear bomb and may have already built one, says the Sunday Times.

Citing a British Defense Ministry report, the Times said Sunday that Japan "has the expertise to go nuclear very quickly."

The report said that the Japanese had put together a bomb, needing only "adequate amounts of plutonium for the core."

The newspaper said the intelligence report stressed that there was no evidence Japan had abandoned its non-nuclear stance for a nuclear weapons program.

In Tokyo, a Defense Agency spokesman, Takahiro Goto, said: "We have maintained our principles that prohibit manufacturing, possession and bringing in nuclear weapons, and we will continue that policy."

Public opposition to nuclear weapons is deep in Japan, the only nation to have been hit with atomic bombs. Official policy is not to produce, possess or allow nuclear weapons on Japanese territory.

But fear that North Korea may be building nuclear weapons has some in Japan questioning that policy. …
